Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

I originally came from New York City and I have NEVER heard of fried green tomatoes. First off, I have never even seen a green tomato in the Super Wal-Mart before! It was not until five years into my Florida integration that I heard of this strange concoction. Then another five before tasting one. First off, I have never even seen a green tomato in the Super Wal-Mart before!

Recently, I started growing my own tomatoes and I decided to pick off some of the green ones to do a small experiment. I tried a random fried green tomato recipe and it was very addicting. As I fried them up for my fiance and I, we couldn’t stop eating them. I would fry a few, let them cool while others fry, and then gobble them up. We never got to sit down and eat them because they never made to a serving plate 🙂 Then the next day, I actually see green tomatoes at a local grocery market. I was stunned. I have gone twenty-three years of my life never seeing a green tomato and then BAM I see a whole cart of them. Ingredients:

  • 3 large Green Tomatoes
  • Garlic Salt to sprinkle
  • 3 Egg
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1 cup Cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper
  • 6 tablespoons Vegetable Oil

Step 1: Slice the tomatoes 1/4 inch thick. *Note: You can use the top slice too. No need to discard the whole thing. Just cute out the rough middle spot with a knife.

Step 2: Sprinkle the slices with garlic salt. Step 3: Beat the eggs in a small bowl and set aside.

Step 3: Combine the flour, cornmeal, and seasonings in another bowl.  

Step 4: This is a three-step dipping process. Dip the slice into the flour mixture, then the egg and then the flour again. Set aside for later.

Step 5: Once all slices are coated, heat the oil over high heat until a bit of flour sizzles when flicked in.

Step 6: Carefully lay the slices in the hot oil and turn the heat to medium-high.

Step 7: Cook 1-2 minutes or until golden. Turn and cook another 1-2 minutes.

Step 8: Drain on a rack.

Step 9: Sprinkle again with salt while still hot.

Step 10: Serve with some ranch dressing. Eat and Enjoy!
